Established in 2014
The inspiration that led to the eventual creation of Great Outdoors, sprung from a post-earthquake trip to Haiti. In the devastating aftermath of the quake, Matt Gunn (one of the GO co-founders), identified a need for more sanitary public facilities, along with increased accessibility for all citizens. Though Gunn had begun establishing compostable toilets for the people of Haiti, it wasn't until a couple years later, back in his home state of Utah, that he teamed up with his friend, Shawn Taylor, to create Eco Commode. Eco Commode implemented eight-unit trailers made of recycled materials to provide a portable composting toilet service for outdoor events. Since then, the company has continued to grow and evolve to address the increasing demand for both a pleasant and eco-friendly portable toilet solution.

Our GoalOur goal is to provide a more pleasant and eco-friendly solution to today's portable toilet problems. With concerns of smell and sanitation, experience proves that proper application of carbonaceous materials (sawdust) to human waste neutralizes odor and provides an "earthy, woody" scent. Additionally, the use of sawdust in a composting toilet eliminates a need for chemically treated liquids, sloshing and splashing, and thus provides a more eco-conscious solution to the larger human waste problem. taking our composting solution one step farther, our system includes the use of an industrial-sized thermophilic composter that ensures usable compost as the end-product.
