What an exciting weekend for Great Outdoors toilets with the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance up at the Brighton Ski Resort in Utah!
Even though the participants at the festival had access to indoor bathrooms at the resort, many still chose to check out our portable compost toilets and offer their feedback! While some of the kids were a bit wary and "scared" of these tented toilets, the adults were all quite impressed! We had our toilets set up just to the edge of the camping area, but not far off from the tents- including my own! The survey results confirm that our toilets did NOT smell from the outside, or on the inside. We were really pleased to find out how many people were actually curious about the toilets and the composting concept itself. We talked about problems and possible solutions for people living on the road in their van or RV, those who want to buy property and want to avoid the use of plumbing and septic for toilets, "wag bags" for backcountry adventurers, and bathroom needs for events in remote locations. Beyond the more immediate issues, there seemed to be an underlying concern or interest in how our human waste is currently processed, and why composting sounds better! For those curious souls, I suggest you give a look at this fun and informative book, The Humanure Handbook, by Joseph Jenkins. Thank you to all the wonderful companies and reps for engaging in some fun "toilet talk" with us! Thank you Momentum Climbing, The Gear Room, Black Diamond, and Alpine Earthworks. And a SPECIAL THANKS to the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance for welcoming us to their event!
